A Critique of the Urban Mission of the Church in the Light of an Emerging Postmodern Condition

Abstract: The world is becoming an urban society. The urban expansion witnessed during the twentieh century and continuing into the twenty-first century is unprecedented in the history of the human civilization. Simultaneously, the Western world faces the paradigm shift from the modern era to a postmodern condition. Both movements have remarkable implications for the mission of the Church in urbanized, postmodernizing societies. Shaped by the modern worldview, the Church is now further ostracized by the postmodern condition.

While the literature of urban mission has grown in the past few years, very little consideration has been given to the particular issues and implications of urban mission in the context of postmodernity. Thus, this study addresses the relationship between the urban mission of the Church and the emergence of the postmodern condition.

This investigation of urban mission in the light of the postmodern ethos is based on the historical, philosophical, sociological, and cultural analyses of the modern and the postmodern eras provided in chapters 2 and 3, respectively. Chapter 4 explores the relationship between the urban mission of the Church and postmodern condition primarily by location the emergence of postmodernism in the context of urbanization and globalization. Some urban missiological implications and suggested principles for reaching the postmodern mind in the urban context are drawn from the findings of this research and are presented in chapter 5.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the centralizing power of the city- added to the pervasive influence of a global market- makes the urban environment the locus of the postmodern condition. Consequently, the challenges and opportunities for urban mission have never been greater. In spite of major threats postmodernism poses for mission, the current urban socio-cultural outlook offers opportunities that did not exist a few decades ago. Therefore, within the context of the combined forces of urbanization, globalization, and postmodernism, an extensive review of the strategies and methods of urban mission is vital for the development of postmodern-sensitive churches as the church seeks to fulfill its calling to participate in God's mission to urbanized, postmodernizing generations.

RESUMO: O mundo está se tornando uma sociedade urbana. A expansão urbana observada no século XX e no início do século XXI não tem precedentes na história da civilização humana. Ao mesmo tempo, o mundo ocidental experimenta a mudança de paradigma da era moderna para a pós-moderna. Ambos eventos têm implicações notáveis para a missão da Igreja em uma sociedade urbana e em processo de pós-modernização. Marcada pela visão do modernismo, a Igreja experimenta hoje um ostracismo oriundo das condições pós-modernas.

Apesar da literatura acerca da missão em contexto urbano ter crescido nos últimos anos, pouca consideração tem sido dada às questões específicas e às implicações de uma missão urbana no contexto da pós-modernidade. Por isso, este estudo aborda o relacionamento da missão urbana da Igreja e a emergência do contexto pós-moderno.

Esta pesquisa sobre a missão urbana, à luz do ethos pós-moderno, está baseada sobre uma análise histórica, filosófica, sociológica e cultural das eras moderna e pós-moderna, temas dos capítulos 2 e 3, respectivamente. O capítulo 4 explora o relacionamento entre a missão urbana da Igreja e o pós-modernismo, primariamente ao localizar o surgimento do pós-modernismo no contexto da urbanização e da globalização. O capítulo 5 apresenta algumas implicações missiológicas e sugere princípios para atingir a mente pós-moderna em um contexto urbano, a partir das descobertas dessa pesquisa.

No início do século XXI, o poder centralizador da cidade, secundado pela influência pervasiva de um mercado global, torna o meio urbano o locus do pós-modernismo. Conseqüentemente, os desafios e as oportunidades de uma missão urbana nunca foram tão grandes. Apesar de alguns grandes problemas que o pós-modernismo levanta para a missão, essa corrente socio-cultural oferece oportunidades inexistentes a poucas décadas atrás. Portanto, dentro do contexto da interação das forças da urbanização, globalização e pós-modernismo, uma revisão profunda das estratégias e métodos da missão urbana é vital para o desenvolvimento de igrejas sensíveis ao fenômeno pós-moderno, à medida que a Igreja procura atender seu chamado à participar na missão divina direcionada a uma geração urbana e cada vez mais pós-moderna.
